Traveling Herb Seminar #92 - Historic Philadelphia Gardens

On this bus tour we will visit  Highlands Mansion and Gardens, this late 18th Century mansion is  on 44 acres with a two acre formal garden.  Surrounded by massive stone walls, the gardens offer a beautiful example of early 20th century estate gardening with an unusual blend of horticulture and architecture.  Here we will tour the house, garden and enjoy our buffet lunch in the glassed in porch. Lunch will feature a variety of small sandwiches (wraps, pinwheels, croissants) and two side salads with dessert.  Next we travel a short distance to historic WyckHouse where the Haines family lived for 9 generations. We will tour the house and small garden here.  Our day rounds out with a visit to the Barnes Foundation Arboretum.  Mr Barnes is well known for his art collection but we are visiting the collection of Mrs Barnes, eight miles from the Philadelphia campus.  Laura Barnes dedicated herself to the arboretum which has many highlights, fern glen, magnolias and lilacs and a medicinal garden arranged according to the healing systems that use them: alleopathic, aromatherapy, Native American etc.
